Product Description

A beautiful Burmese late 19th century heavy silver belt buckle, decorated in chased in high relief repousse depicting a pair of dancing Apsaras.

This gives the buckle very much of a 3 dimensional appearance. The buckle background is finished in cut-out foliage. The buckle is hinged and has 2 loops on either end. The way the buckle is constructed leads to the conclusion that it is only half of the buckle, but it remains a very impressive piece. Condition is very good to excellent. There are no maker’s marks or assay stamps.

The apsara, are a type of female celestial dancing spirits of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist culture. They figure prominently in the sculpture, dance, literature and painting of many South Asian and Southeast Asian cultures. They are beautiful, supernatural female beings. They are youthful and elegant, and superb in the art of dancing. They dance to the music made by the Gandharvas (musicians), usually in the palaces of the gods, entertaining and sometimes seducing gods and men.
