Product Description

A scarce and beautiful looking 1873 model size 8 Wm Ellery Waltham 14 – 16 carat gold Pocket Watch.

The watch is in working condition and keeps good time, being produced by the American Waltham Watch Co. The watch has a white circular dial with black painted Roman numerals and blue steel hands. There is a dedicated second dial at 6 o’clock. The 7 Jewel movement is the 1873 pattern, and is numbered 1,107662, dating the watch to 1877. It is also engraved in a flowery script: Wm Ellery WALTHAM. MASS. The movement is Size 8, that is 36.4 mm. The time adjustment and winder is by key (size 8), which is present.

The case has both a hinged dust cover and hinged back cover. The former has 2 holes for the key. It is also stamped with the Waltham W and numbered 48604. The latter is unusual as it is stamped with a small version of the American eagle and an 18, within a cartouche. However, the outside body of the watch is in 14 carat (585 tested) gold and is a light rose colour, whereas the inside is deep yellow and 18 carat gold, and plated on top.

Condition overall is good. There are a couple of small brown marks on the white face, but these may clean up. The glass lens has a small chip on the tip of the edge at 3 o’clock.

William Ellery watches became famous as they were the first to standardise construction, allowing the company to supply the US Army during the Civil War with watches at 13 dollars each.
