Product Description

A nice looking example of the first run of gold cased Smiths’ Wristwatches.

Although it is generally accepted and documented that Smiths started the civilian production in 1947. However, they produced some in 1946, as gold presentation retirement watches for ICI and in this case.

The watch has the early run movement. This is a small 29mm 3 piece cased watch in 9 carat (375) gold, with a Dennison case reference number 12327 and the serial number 94417. It has the Birmingham Assay mark and the date 1946 (W). The frosted gilt English made 15 Jewel lever movement is C series numbered C15808. The balance is the higher grade often found in JW Benson Smiths. The face is champagne coloured with Arabic numerals painted in luminous paint. The minute and hour hands also have luminous paint and there is a smaller second dial at 6 o’clock. The watch also features concealed winding, straight one piece click and click spring and anti-magnetic hairspring. The watch has been serviced and keeps good time. The watch has a military style brown leather strap.
The gold base plate has been engraved: PRESENTED TO MR. J.F.R. HUGHES BY CAPTAIN C.R. COOK UPON THE COMPLETION OF 15 YEARS LOYAL SERVICE WITH B.M.P. Ltd/G.A.C. Ltd NOV. 1950.
