c1938 Tudor 18ct Gold Ladies Watch with 9ct Strap

A very attractive Art Deco Tudor (Rolex) 18 carat yellow gold (750) Ladies’ watch with a 9 carat gold (375) flat square and chevron chain strap.
The watch is in good working order. It has been cleaned and serviced and keeps very good time. It has a square body with a smaller rectangular mineral crystal lens and watch face, surrounded by sunburst striated decoration. The face is light champagne colour with gold batons for the hours and the TUDOR above a rose logo. The watch has manual winding. The inside movement is stamped TUDOR with 17 jewels. The back plate is hallmarked 750. The strap is hallmarked 9 cart with the London Assay date mark for 1938.

In 1926, the TUDOR brand was registered by the watch factory "Veuve de Philippe Hüther" and has belonged completely to the Rolex family since 1936. All Tudor collections have been manufactured under Rolex quality supervision ever since. The strategy is obviously to offer Rolex quality at a lower price. Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex and buyer of Tudor, put the idea this way: -"For some years now, I have been considering the idea of making a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standard of dependability for which Rolex is famous. I decided to form a separate company, with the object of making and marketing this new watch. It is called the Tudor Watch Company."
From 1936 onwards (till 1969), the Tudor rose was the company logo, depicted on the dial. This rose and the brand name were based on the symbol for England.
