Product Description

A fine looking example of a rare French Mannlicher Berthier M1892 1st Pattern bayonet and scabbard.

This bayonet was made to be used with the Mannliche Berthier Artillery Carbine and is a very nice design. The difference between the 1st Pattern and the 2nd is that the bayonets were originally produced with composite plastic grips, but were changed to wood grips, when the plastic was found to split. They originally had a quillon, but these were partially or totally removed, during WWI. They are normally found with the quillon partially removed, as the bayonet’s serial number is stamped on part of it. This is the only example we have found with a completely removed quillon.

The bayonet has a straight sword like polished blade which is fullered. It has an unusual feature of another short fuller on the top edge of the blade, near the tip, which aided penetration. The blade has a notch on both sides near to the crossguard which locks the bayonet in the scabbard with a click. The muzzle ring overlaps the grips and has a notch cut in at the rear which engaged at the rifles foresight.

There is, as a result of losing the quillon, no serial number, but the blade is stamped P on the ricasso.
Condition is good with a clean, bright blade and age toning to the steel fittings.
