c1600 Japanese Tanto Dagger with Mikado Menuki

A nice example of a late 16th Century or early 17th Century Japanese Koto Period Tanto in reasonable to good condition.

The blade has remnants of the hamon temper line and has two fuller grooves but the top 2-3 mm has broken off the tip. The tang is signed with a single character which represents Shin.

The furniture is very attractive with a nice carved iron tsuba. The ray skin handle has the crests of the Mikado. These are gilded Kiri, meaning the bearer was a member of the Imperial family. The pommel is unfortunately missing, but could be restored.
