Product Description

A fine example of an 1822 Pattern cavalry sword that bears, on the basket, the Victorian Royal Cypher, together with its metal scabbard.

The knuckle guard comprises 3 brass bands with the VR (Victoria Regina) cypher. The sword is definitely more of a fighting weapon than a decoration for the parade ground. It has a piped back blade and is devoid of any decoration on the blade, or maker’s details. The basket is standard in design and the handle is shagreen leather with twisted wire binding. There is a white leather sword knot. The scabbard is steel. Given the quality, it is surprising that there are no maker’s marks. The sword is longer than standard, so the owner was probably quite tall.

The 1822 British Cavalry sword was brought in after the experiences of the Napoleonic Wars and although instituted by George IV, was continued in the Victorian era.
