Product Description

A nice clean example of a Victorian 1832 Pattern Warrant Officer's sword, which dates to the first year or so of Edward VII’s reign.

The blade has the Royal Victorian Coat of Arms (with the Queen’s crown) on one side, and the King’s crown above the fouled anchor on the other. The new template for acid etching Edwards coat of arms had most likely not been made, at the time the sword was produced. The sword is in good condition.

The sword is like the 1827 standard Naval Officer's version, except for the pommel not being a lion’s head and the grip being black. The 1832 Regulations stipulated Warrant Officers should carry the sword and included Gunners, Boatswains and Carpenters.

The hilt is made of bronze/brass with a nice patina of age. It has the moulded Edwardian crown above the anchor. There is a folding back plate, that locks the sword in the scabbard. The blade is single edged with a large single fuller on either side and is acid etched decorated with the fouled anchor, Royal Coat of Arms and plenty of arabesques. There isn’t a maker’s name, but the fleur de lis proofmark may indicate that it was by Reeves of Piccadilly . The proofmark warrants the quality of the steel. The blade is bright with just a few spots of old oxide. The scabbard is made of leather with brass fittings.
