Product Description

A very nice example of a c1882 French Army Officer’s, which is unusual, in that it combines features of the earlier M1845 sword with the quite different M1882 design that replaced it.

It is a sword with the M1845 brass basket guard that is richly decorated with pierced roses and laurels, with a scroll quillon. The handle is a ridged horn grip with twisted copper wire to hold it in place and provide grip, when in the hand. Normally, it would have had a slightly upcurved single edged blade, with a fuller on either side. It actually has the straight, double edged, smooth blade, that was introduced on the M1882 sword, which had a different design of hilt. The reason for this is obvious, given that the 1882 sword is quite sober and functional in design, unlike its predecessor. However, only a senior officer would have had the leeway to customise a sword, against the army regulations. The sword has a chrome plated scabbard and the blade is marked on the ricasso with the maker’s name: MANUFACTURE FRANCAISE - ARMES ET CYCLES – ST ETIENNE. Condition is very good, with just a small amount of spotting to the chrome of the scabbard.

Armes et Cycles St Etienne was established at Villebouef, Saint-Etienne, in 1885, by directors Mimard and Blachon for the manufacture of sporting guns and bicycles under the Hirondelle trade-mark. Initially it handled the sale and repair of mainly British bicycles and tricycles. Own production of bicycles did not begin, and then only on a small scale, until March 1888. The company specialised more and more in bicycles, with sales reaching 12000 a year by 1911. The company closed down in 1940, as a result of the war.
