Product Description

A fine collection of pre-WWII German photographs pertaining to the American visit by the Kriegsmarine Deutschland Class Battleship SCHLESIEN.

These photos belonged to one of the trainee officer, Herman WEITKAMP, who died 14/3/1945 onboard a Motor Torpedo Boat T3 which sank near the Hel Peninsula, Poland. We include his Service papers stamped by the Archives Dept, French High Commissariat in Germany, Berlin 1954.

Built in 1906 as a pre-Dreadnought Class, the SCHLESIEN was at the Battle of Jutland and bombarded the East Coast of England in 1914 (Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby). Surviving WWI, she became a training ship and toured the Americas in 1937.

The photos are of the ship in harbour and at sea. There are many of the crew, including the Crossing of the Equator Ceremony, Punta Arenas in Chile where the majority of the pictures were taken of parades, a Naval funeral, Christmas and visits from foreign dignitaries. There are also pictures of Sao Paulo and Haiti and a presentation photo of the ship signed by the Captain (Friedrich Wilhelm Fleischer) and Officers.
