Product Description

A fine antique brass high relief plaque depicting the Duke of Wellington, most likely to commemorate the death of Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley in1852.

It is probably based on the portrait by sir Thomas Lawrence, that was commissioned by the Earl of Bathurst (originally on his horse Copenhagen). The Duke is wearing a cloak, tied round his neck. Underneath is a scroll with WELLINGTON. The plaque has been mounted in a fine quality period oak frame.

He was one of the leading military and political figures of 19th-century Britain. His defeat of Napoléon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 put him in the top rank of Britain's military heroes.
