Product Description

A fine quality and rare original c1892 period photograph of the British Victorian Battleship ‘HMS Royal Sovereign’.

The black and white photo shows the ship ploughing through a moderate sea, light smoke coming out of one of her funnels. The image is annotated in the bottom corner HMS ROYAL SOVEREIGN and the stock number 5352. The condition is very good and the photo has been mounted, framed and glazed. The frame has a few chips to the gilt gesso.

HMS Royal Sovereign was derived from that of the Admiral-class ironclad battleships and was the lead ship of the seven ships in her class of pre-dreadnought battleships built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s. The ship was commissioned in 1892 and served as the flagship of the Channel Fleet for the next five years. She had a short service life. She was transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet in 1897 and returned home in 1902 and was briefly assigned as a coast guard ship. Royal Sovereign was reduced to reserve in 1905 and was taken out of service in 1909. The ship was sold for scrap four years later and subsequently broken up in Italy.
