Product Description

A rare original example of WWI Poster to celebrate the Liberation of the town of Lille, in Northern France, on the 17th of October 1918.

It gives thanks to the liberators, the 47th London Division. Condition is good, but with a few blemishes, although they do not diminish the look.

The poster is printed on tricolour paper by V. Bouvier of Loos, dated at lower left ‘Lille, le 17 Octobre 1918’. It proclaims ‘Honour and Glory for 47th Division our Deliverers’. The poster has been framed and glazed. It was produced in commemoration and thanks to the officers and men of the 47th (London) Division, under General William Birdwood, who liberated the Lille with a parade through the city on October 28th. According to contemporary account, an enterprising local printed and produced a number of these posters (in both English and French) to welcome the liberating troops. The parade was witnessed not only by local civilian and military dignitaries, but also by the British Secretary of State for War, Winston Churchill.

The 2nd London Division was designated the 47th Division in 1915, during the Great War. The division was sent to France in March 1915, one of the first Territorial divisions to enter the fighting and served on the Western Front for the duration of the war. The division fought in the Battle of Aubers Ridge, the Battle of Festubert, the Battle of Loos, the 1 July 1916 Battle of the Somme, including the Battle of Flers-Courcelette and the capture of High Wood. After mid-1916, the battles included the Battle of Le Transloy, the Battle of Messines, and the Battle of Cambrai.
