Product Description

An extremely rare French military photo album, compiled by an artillery officer of the 44th Le Mans Regiment during the early months of 1914.

Of equine interest as well as military interest, the album begins with a horse race in the ‘Quinconces des Jacobins’ park in Le Mans. The next page shows a Summer Festival, with cart races and donkey riding, held on the 25th June 1914, just 3 days before the outbreak of World War One. Further into the book, a few pages show photographs taken during military manoeuvres, as well some regimental photographs from the barracks in Le Mans.

In the middle of the book, there are two unusual heart-shaped photographs, of men on horseback, possibly taken for distant sweethearts. A young officer with a moustache frequently appears in the album; we assume that he is a close friend of the photographer. The album concludes with an unpublished photograph of General Boelle on horseback and another of Colonel Sabattier, during a military parade of the 26th March 1914.

The 44th regiment were present at Le Marne (1914), Champagne (1915), Verdun (1916), Marne (1917), Champagne 1918.

The condition of the album is good, though some of the pages have separated from the spine of the book. The photographs are generally very clear, though some are crisper than others. In total the album displays 59 photographs of varying sizes, from a period of historical significance.
