Product Description

A nice WWII and postwar British Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Flying Log Book to 1605462 Warrant Officer Douglas John Lander REED, who flew Ansons, Wellingtons and Lancasters during the War and in the year after.

The Log boog begins with training flights in 1943, on Ansons in Canada. He trains as a Navigator. He is back in the UK in 1944, and starts training on Wellington bombers, all over the country. Surprisingly, he is still flying Wellingtons until April 1945, when he joins the 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit at Winthorpe, to convert to Lancaster bombers. He is still training when the V.E. Day arrives. He takes part on both the 23.7.45 and the 12.8.45 on what is termed the Baedeker Flight. This was a route of the major German cities and areas of bombing interest, including the Mohne Dam, of Dambusters fame. After that he joins the 16 F.U. (Ferrying Unit) at Dunkeswell and is ferrying staff and supplies to and from the Mediterranean theatre and the Middle East. With the Log Book are the RAF Certificate of Air Release, his RAF Flying Clothing Card (dated 1944), receipt of a change of soldier’s next of kin, RAF certificate of discharge in order to join the Royal Artillery T.A., as a sergeant, in 1954, and a newspaper clipping about the Royal Flying Corps song “A poor aviator lay dying”…
Interesting piece of history. The condition of the contents is good, but the spine of the book is missing. There is also his British War Medal.
