Product Description

A c1900, exceedingly rare gilded bronze banner head depicting the two-headed Imperial Russian Eagle.

The construction is single piece and was originally of gilded bronze. With age, the gilding has worn, the remnants of which can be seen in crevices and under parts.

The banner head came with a collection of items belonging to Gustave Lannes, Marquis of Montebello and ‘Ancien Ambassadeur de France”. In his long and decorated career, he served in Brussels, St Petersburg and Constantinople. His tenure in the Russian capital (1891-1905) oversaw the agreement of a Franco-Russian alliance and saw him become a close acquaintance of the Romanovs.

A facsimile comes included and it depicts the Marquis in formal dress, with a vast array of Imperial Russian orders.

The condition is very good, considering its age and is extremely impressive considering the wide scale Bolshevik purge of Imperial Russian artifacts.

The original photograph shown in the pictures isn't included in the listing, but a good quality facsimile of the original photo of Gustave Lannes is provided instead.
