Product Description

A very nice quality field service large compensated (for temperature) aneroid barometer (numbered 2420), complete with its leather case, that was made by T. Wheeler Scientific Instruments Ltd of London.

It has a gilded brass body, with a large silvered face. There is a rotating outer bezel, with a marker that allows the pressure to be recorded. The pressures are marked in both inches of mercury and millibars. This helps date it to the interwar years of c1930. It carries the HO logo and 83, with the broad arrow indicating government property, which indicates it was made specifically for the Hydrographic Office for use on a weather station, or on board a weather ship.

The scale of pressure on the metal dial in millibars was adopted by the Met Office in 1914 for their daily weather reports. The millibar scale was added to the barometer dials in the 1920s and the mercury inches was discontinued in 1935 in the majority of government issued barometers.

It appears to be in fine working order. It is also in very good cosmetic condition, with a clean dial and glass. The leather case is also in fine condition. The inside is lined with scarlet coloured velvet. The case originally had carrying straps, but they have been removed in the past. The case is also stamped HO and 83, with the broad arrow.
