Product Description

A rare original Chinese Flag for the Kuomintang led Republic of China.

They overthrew the Imperial Qing Dynasty, but were overthrown by the Communists in a civil war that lasted from 1927 to 1949. It dates from around 1930 and was part of a series of Naval Flags, all for different nations of that period, that we purchased. It is British made and would have been flown by the ship, when in Chinese waters and ports. It is made of linen and is not printed, but of multipiece construction. The flag is in good condition and has been used, with a little bit of fraying at the right corners. It consists of a red field with a blue canton bearing a white disc with twelve triangles surrounding it. The disc and triangles symbolize the sun and rays of light emanating from it respectively. It has a rope with a wooden toggle to attach it to a flagpole.

The flag was originally designed by the anti-Qing group, the ‘Revive China Society’ in 1894 with the addition of the red field component in 1906. The twelve rays of the white Sun symbolize the twelve months and the twelve traditional shichen, a traditional unit of time which corresponds to two modern hours. Sun Yat-sen added the "Red Earth" to the flag to signify the blood of the revolutionaries who sacrificed themselves in order to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and create the ROC. Together, the three colours of the flag correspond to the Three Principles of the People: Blue represents nationalism and liberty; White represents democracy and equality; and Red represents the people's livelihood and fraternity. President Chiang Kai-shek proclaimed on the National Day in 1929, - "As long as a national flag with Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth flies on the land of China, it symbolises the independence and liberty of the descendants of the Huang Emperor". It was first used in mainland China as the Navy flag in 1912, and was made the official national flag of the Republic of China (ROC) in 1928 by the Kuomintang (KMT). Flying it in the People’s Republic of China is illegal, but it has become the flag of Taiwan (Formosa).
