Product Description

A very unusual Schermuly Line Throwing Pistol that was invented for saving life at sea.

The pistol is based on the Webley & Scott brass flare pistol, with a steel barrel extension to take a rocket that would propel a wire over distance. The wire could be attached to a cable to help transfer people from ship to ship or shore to ship. The system was invented by Alfred James Schermuly around 1920 and is credited with having saved countless lives.

The pistol barrel has an extra handle to steady the gun when firing. The wood grips are made of mahogany. Given its life saving usage, the pistol is exempt from the current regulations regarding firearms and does not require deactivation (unlike the very similar flare guns). The pistol has various proof marks and is numbered 48854. It is also stamped SPRA which stands for Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus.

Condition is good. The steel barrel has been painted black over the factory green, to inhibit rust.
