Product Description

An interesting flag that we believe is linked to the Middlesex Home Guard and is probably the flag for the 12th Battalion that was based in Wembley.

The flag consists of a pair of crossed seaxes (knotched swords) underneath a saxon crown, within a shield. The shield is on a background of red and black. The seaxes and the saxon crown are the old emblems of the crest of Wembley and these in turn are drawn from the crest of Middlesex, which consists of 3 parallel seaxes under the saxon crown.

We have not been able to find conclusive evidence that confirms that the flag actually belonged to the Home Guard, but it did come with a helmet that is marked up to the 1st Battalion of the Middlesex Home Guard, and we are sure that the flag is military in origin. Also, with it was a trumpet banner, with the same red and black bands.

The flag has been flown and is moderately frayed at the tail end. The colour of the central black band is also quite faded and looks grey brown. Worthy of further research.
