Product Description

A nice looking example of a Massachusetts or New York Militia long flintlock musket that has elements of a Brown Bess and a Dutch musket.

It may be earlier, going back to the War of Independence c1780. The musket has a 42inch barrel and a .72 calibre barrel, which is octagonal at the breech end, becoming round about a third of the way to the muzzle. The barrel is held in place by 3 steel bands which are similar to the Dutch or German muskets. The bayonet lug is on the underside of the barrel. All the steel metal (there isn’t any brass) parts of the musket retain good, smooth gunmetal brown surfaces with patina of age. The full-stock is made of American Black walnut, with a shallow comb on the buttstock, giving it a graceful streamlined profile. There are some letters and numbers stamped on the wood, although they are difficult to read.

The musket remains in a good mechanically functional order with a very strong mainspring. The lockplate is more akin to the British Brown Bess, with an elegant swan neck hammer. The trigger has the curl of the Brown Bess, but the gun is devoid of any maker’s markings. The trigger guard has had the number XIIII engraved on it, which may be the repairing gunsmith’s reference. The musket is missing the retaining bolt that anchors down the barrel tang. Also, one of the retaining screws of the S plate has been replaced. Nice looking and rare gun.
