Product Description

A rare and surprisingly good condition example of the first ‘Tommy’ helmet shell to reach the British Troops in the trenches in 1915.

It is the Type B Brodie helmet that was made from Hadfield (manganese) steel. The helmet appeared hurriedly and was not issued to the soldiers as part of their kit, but to those in the trenches and for the period they were there. The helmet displays some of the obvious flaws in the design. Despite the fact that the helmet uses a higher content of manganese, giving it stronger properties, it is still too thin and light. It is also barely magnetic, which makes determining the Type B easy. The stamping is not exactly centred, either. The helmet has a slightly upturned rim at the front. The rim edge is thin and sharp and would likely injure the wearer or those around him, in a fall. The helmet was short lived and replaced by the Mark 1 Brodie helmet. Because these helmets didn’t leave the trenches, they are rare. The helmet shows surface corrosion but maintains some of the paintwork and mud staining.

Hadfield steel, Mangalloy, or manganese steel is an alloy steel containing an average of around 13% manganese. Hadfield steel is made by alloying steel, containing 0.8 to 1.25% carbon, with 11 to 15% manganese. This makes it non-magnetic steel with extreme anti-wear properties. The material is very resistant to abrasion and will achieve up to three times its surface hardness during conditions of impact, without any increase in brittleness which is usually associated with hardness.
