Product Description

A rare near mint condition American Civil War Confederate soldier’s tunic button with the stylised manuscript font E for Engineers.

The convex button has been made of brass with a gilded finish. The reverse is also made of brass and is stamped with the maker’s details VAN WART. SON & Co. This style of button and maker is very sought after, with similar examples in the USA going for 500US$.

Buttons on Confederate uniforms served more than the one obvious purpose. They were an indicator of rank, depending on the number. Seven evenly spaced buttons denoted a junior officer, with eight for the higher ranks. The buttons were often identifiers of state of origin or specifically branch of service. The latter used letters. The E for engineers came in a variety of fonts. The Van Wart is probably the most striking.
