Product Description

A very interesting group of boxed medals that were awarded to MX49305 Sick Bay Petty Officer Richard W. Whittington, who served on both HMS Aurora and HMS Diadem.

The group includes the 1939/45 Star, the Atlantic Star with France & Germany Clasp, the Italy Star, the British War Medal with Mention in Dispatches Oakleaf and the Naval Long Service Good Conduct Medal (George VI) HMS Diadem. The medals are still in their respective paper sleeves, with folded ribbons. They have never been mounted or worn.

The cardboard case of issue is addressed to him and his address was 40 Pelham Road, Gosport, Hants. The certificate confirms that he is entitled to 6 awards. Both the clasp and the MID oakleaf count as separate awards. The Long Service medal would have been issued later and therefore is not noted in the certificate.

Both the Aurora and the Diadem had distinguished careers during the War. HMS Aurora was involved in the hunt for the Bismark and active in the Mediterranean. The Mention in Dispatches to Whittington was whilst he was a Sick Bay Attendant on board Aurora. HMS Diadem was in the European Theatre throughout the War, taking part in Artic Convoys and D-Day.
