1868 Wurttemberg Memento Mori Officer's Body Bag

A very unusual and rare German Military Officer's Memento Mori Body Bag.

The bag is made of a heavy duty linen material with carefully applied blank ink in gothic style. The front has No 1, denoting a commanding officer and the name Matthaus Metzger in Aalen. Below that is a lance head with MM, surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves and the date 1868. The fact that it was probably a commanding officer may explain the fact that he was not buried in it, using instead a coffin.

Wurttemberg had sided with Austria in the Austrio-Prussia War but the conflict had ended by 1868. The back of the bag is marked MM over A.
