Product Description

A fine original WWII German Street Sign with ‘Rommel Strasse’, in honour of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the ‘Desert Fox’.

The sign dates from 1944 and would be after his death. Proof of this is the fact that the sign has been painted over the original street sign, in white paint with black lettering. The letters are in a Gothic script. Condition is good with a little damage and rust to the white background. The sign, as with original period signs in Germany, is slightly convex. Despite being professionally painted, you can make out some of the original letters of the original enamelled finish, as they had a slight raised profile. The necessary economisation of materials, towards the end of the War, meant that the sign was painted instead of remade.

Field Marshal Rommel was given a hero’s state funeral, and had supposedly died of wounds from injuries he received some months earlier. However, the truth was that he had been implicated in the Hitler Bomb Plot and was given the option of committing suicide or being tried and executed as a traitor. He chose the former. Rommel (1891 – 1944) is best remembered as the legendary leader of the Afrika Korps and the commander of the German forces defending the Atlantic Wall.
