Product Description

A very nice looking example of the 1886 to 1918 French Infantry Kepi as worn by a Commandant (Major).

The kepi probably dates from around 1890 and has the more floppy ‘Foulard’ shape. It has the blue-black and red combination colours, representing Infantry, and the 4 gold bullion rings denotes the officer rank. The gold bullion applied flaming grenade represents the French Army (not Artillery). The leather peak is rounded and the chin strap is a gold bullion ribbon strap and a secondary, more substantial, black leather adjustable strap. The inside is lined in mauve silk, with a black leather sweat-liner. There are no maker’s mark, but for an applied B. The black inside liner is partly detached and has the name S 6? Collombet. The cap shows a few moth nips and grazing and wear, but remains a very attractive example. Head size is about 57 (7 1/8) approximately.

Size: 25 x 20.5 x 13 cm (9 7/8 x 8 x 5 1/8 inches)
