Product Description

A very nice looking example of the 1886 to 1918 French Infantry Kepi as worn by a Commandant (Major).

The kepi probably dates from around 1900 and has the more puffed up ‘Foulard’ shape. It has the blue-black and red combination colours, representing Infantry, and the 4 gold bullion rings denotes the officer rank. The officer belonged to the 63rd Infantry Regiment, which had a long and distinguished history, beginning during the French Revolution and achieving battle honours of Verdun 1916, l’Aisne 1918 and Reims 1918. The number is hand embroidered on the front of the kepi. The leather peak is rounded and the chin strap is black patent leather with gold bullion border. The inside is lined in brown silk and has the maker’s mark of J. Auzeau, Clermont Ferrand. The cap shows a few moth nips and grazing and wear, but remains a very attractive example. Head size is about 57 (7 1/8) approximately.
