Product Description

A very nice looking example of the 1886 to 1918 French Infantry Kepi as worn by a Commandant (Major).

The kepi probably dates from around 1914 and has the more compact ‘Polo’ shape. It has the blue-black and red combination colours, representing Infantry, and the 4 gold bullion rings denotes the officer rank. The officer belonged to the 322rd Infantry Regiment, which was created in 1914 and lasted the period of WWI. It had a distinguished War record with its battle honours of Champagne in 1915 and Verdun in 1916. The number is hand embroidered on the front of the kepi. The leather peak is rounded and the chin strap is a gold bullion band strap. The inside is lined in crimson cotton and has the maker’s mark of B. Peisson of Philippeville (now Skikda), Algeria. The cap shows a few moth nips and grazing and wear, but remains a very attractive example. Head size is about 57 (7 1/8) approximately. Rare and short lived regimental kepi.

Size: 25 x 21 x 9.5 cm (9 7/8 x 8 x 3 ¾ inches)
