Product Description

An ultra rare, original WWII period, United States Army Sniper's camouflage blouse in very good used condition.

The blouse is rare in that it was made under contract by a British company in the preparations to D-Day and not from US made stock. Either way, American camouflage is rare in the European Theatre of Operations, because camouflage uniforms issued to troops were soon recalled. The reason for this is that they made the soldiers look too much like Waffen SS troops and therefore incurred incidents of friendly fire.

The blouse is fully reversible with the brown pattern on one side and the green on the other. The camouflage had originally been designed for the US Marines and was for beach and jungle camouflage. With some minor modifications, it was found to work in the temperate climate of Europe. There are two large breast pockets on both inside and outside, whichever way the jacket is worn. This is different to the American made version, which only had pockets on one side.

The buttons are made of plastic and fit in hidden fly buttonholes, as on British battle tunics. The material is of a rugged twill and is the same as that used on British Denison paratrooper smocks. The US made examples are in herringbone twill (HBT).

We have not been able to find more than 1 example, in a collection, and reference to another. The referenced one had the maker's label, printed with: BLOUSE SUIT SNIPERS USA ETO SPEC. No. U/1440 M. BELMONT & Co. LTD 1944, but this example does not have a label and shows no sign of one having been removed. It was mentioned that the remainder stock was sold by the US to France, for the war in Indochina, but that could be Pacific stock.

Size is Extra Large, which is very surprising. It must be that they were meant to be baggy and worn over other clothing. The tunic has been appraised on Militaria forums and approved as original. This is considered to be the Holy Grail of American camouflage uniforms.
