Louis Kuppenheim Silver Compact Lipstick Holder Carl Heiss

A fine 900 silver compact and lipstick holder in the form of a Japanese ‘Inro’, made by Louis Kuppenheim (active 1900-1940) during from the early decades of the twentieth century.

The compact opens to a gilt interior with three compartments. Behind the mirror there is a section of cream Bakelite where notes can be made and easily erased. The floral machining is of an exceptional standard, with few flaws.

Though the case bears Austrian import marks for Vienna, as well as those of the retailer ‘Carl Heiss’ on ‘Kohlmarkt’ street, it also bears the ‘LK’ and crown of Louis Kuppenheim, who was based in Pforzheim.

The condition of the compact is very good, though the gilt finish has worn away over time. The interior is almost perfect, with the mirror without scratching and the gilding without wear.

with only the most minor scratching to the red enamel. The black enamel on the sides has worn slightly. Unfortunately, the pencil has been lost.
