Product Description

A very fine condition set of six Sterling Silver (925) Dinner Forks in a plain fiddle design, which has the armorial crest of the Shirley family.

The forks are in very good condition, with very little wear and the hallmarks are very clean and crisp. The silver has been assayed by the London office, with the date stamp for 1831 (William IV) and the maker’s mark of William Chawner II. He died in 1834 and was succeeded by his widow Mary Chawner. The forks have the crest in the form of a Saracen’s head with the initials J. S.. This is the Reverend James Shirley (1802 – 1870), the great-grandson of the 1st Earl Ferrers.

Reverend James Shirley was born on 15 January 1802. He was the son of Evelyn Shirley and Phillis Byam Wollaston. He married Catherine Louisa Dolphin, daughter of Reverend John Dolphin, on 29 December 1831. He died on 7 January 1870 aged 67. He was the Rector at Frettenham, in Norfolk, England. He had three sons and four daughters, all which died unmarried.
