Product Description

A good quality and fine condition pair of silver plated sauce or gravy ladles, that were produced by the first commercial silver platers Elkington & Co.

The company works were set up in 1841 by George Richards Elkington, in Birmingham. The company had patented a commercial way of silver plating and began producing pieces that were more affordable than silver. The company used a series of numbers and then letters to date their wares and these ladles are stamped 1 for 1841. Despite their age they are in very nice condition, without any obvious wear to the silver. They are both stamped E&Co underneath a crown, 1, what appears to be a lyre and GRC. The GRC stands for George Richmond Collis & Co. They were a company set up in 1835, but which didn't appear to produce their own silverplated wares until 1848.

These ladles were probably produced by them and silverplated by Elkington in the latter's first year of production.
