Product Description

A fine set of 9 heavy sterling silver dessert forks, assayed for London and dated 1843.

Each have been engraved with a demi-lion guardant holding a fleur-de-lis in its dexter paw. This heraldic crest was used by the Holland Family and bears closest resemblance to the one used by the Eglwys Bach branch from north Wales.

We believe the cutlery is most likely the property of Reverend Howell Holland Evans (1763-1846), a descendant of the Welsh branch of the Holland Family. He attended Westminster School and Oxford university and became librarian and chaplain to the Duke of Marlborough. He later became rector of St John’s in Westminster and served as Prebendary at Westminster Abbey, where he was buried.

The forks are ‘fiddleback and thread’ pattern, with an attractive ridged border along the base and stem. Each is stamped with the maker’s mark ‘GA’ for George William Adams of Hosier Lane, Smithfield, London.

Each of the forks are in fine condition, with only the usual age-related scuffs.
