Product Description

A very nice quality sterling silver chain-mail dress handbag or purse.

It is hallmarked with the London Sterling 925 assay stamp and the date mark of 1904. It also has a period F stamp for imported silver, with the retailer’s mark PE for Paul Ettlinger. There is a small French mark on one of the suspension loops, which appears to be for J. Moche et Compagnie. The first couple of links of the chain are also hallmarked. Along the opening lip of the handbag, there is an engraved dedication, which reads: ‘Mrs Batson 15th September 1904 – from the wives of the Non Com Officers & Privates of the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment’. Condition is extremely good.
Mrs Batson was the wife of Colonel Herbert Batson CB, in charge of the 2nd Battalion in 1904.
