Product Description

A beautifully made and very fine quality Victorian Elkington silverplate on copper bronze convex Charger or Dish of Penthesilea, Queen of the Amazons, on horseback fighting a pair of Panthers.

The image is in repousse 3 dimensions, with the main features coming out of the charger. The detail of the image is incredible, with the texture of the horse and panther, the hair, the weapons and the background finely represented. Penthesilea carries a spear which has been separately applied to the tableau. It seems to have its inspiration from a similar looking work by the sculptor Kiss. His is called ‘Mounted Amazon Attacked by a Panther’ (1837) and the statue is in front of the National Museum in Berlin. The charger is marked on the bottom edge Elkington & Co. and is typical of the quality of its period dishes, inspired from famous pieces of art by sculptors, such as Morel Ladeuil.

The reverse shows the mirror image and it has the ELKINGTON plaque surmounted by a crown and a C below. There are 4 suspension tabs for the hanging cord. The condition is good, with some wear to the silverplate that reveals the copper underneath. In a way it adds to the relief effect, as it is the highlights that are most worn. Rare and collectable.
