Product Description

A very rare and unusual looking Georgian Sterling Silver teapot that was actually made to pour gravy.

Sometimes referred to as Argyles or Argylls, this isn’t a typical one as it does not have a separate compartment to hold hot water, in order to maintain the temperature. There are tell-tale signs that differentiates it from a teapot. Firstly, it is rather squat, with a low and wide spout. This would help to separate the meat sauce from the upper layer of fat. Secondly, the top lid is surrounded by a wide brim, giving it a funnel effect. This makes it a lot easier to pour the gravy into the pot, without spilling.

The kettle is London silver hallmarked, with the date stamp of 1807. It has the maker’s marks for Thomas Wallis II. Registered November 1778, he is known for producing decanter labels, flatware, jugs, salts, salvers, sauce boats, teapots & stands, wine funnels, until about 1809.

The kettle is oval boat shaped and has engraved decoration to the body. The piece has later been given as a present, with a date of Nov 27th 1877 and A.C. FROM J.C. engraved in the little cartouches. Condition is very good. The handle and finial is made of black ebony.
