Product Description

An impressive pair of George III (c1790) Old Sheffield Plate silver on copper Candlesticks by the desirable maker John Parsons & Co. of Sheffield.

They have V shaped columns which surmount the round bases. Every change of shape is accentuated by triple reeding decoration. The underside of the bases still bears the original baize wool on a steel weight for stability. The base edge are stamped JOHN PARSONS & CO within a cartouche. Condition is good, with a few small bruises and a bit of wear to the silver on the reeded decoration. The underside of the bases would benefit from being recovered in baize. Similar examples by John Parson can sell for thousands.

Old Sheffield plate was a process used in Georgian times to make articles from a sheet of copper fused with a thin sheet of sterling silver. This process predates the silver plating done today (electroplating), which started in the 1840s. The majority of these silverwares were made in Sheffield, UK (hence the term Old Sheffield plate) which was a major UK centre for silver production.
