c1898 Fiddleback Silver Plated Hot Plate Handle

A rare Victorian silver plated Hot Plate Handle in very nice condition.

The device looks like a dinner spoon, with instead of a bowl a clip to attach to the edge of a plate in order to handle it when hot. The cutlery design is a Georgian plain fiddleback and it has the maker’s marks for the famous silversmiths Walker and Hall.

The factory was situated in Sheffield, but they had outlets in all the major cities. There is also next to the maker’s mark, a date letter ‘Epsilon’. The date sequence for Walker & Hall is unclear, but it make the item about 1898. The plate handle has an engraved monogram letter H.
