Product Description

A very fine condition George I Britannia Silver Sugar Caster which has Hallmarks for London 1720.

Britannia Silver has a higher Silver content (958) than Sterling (925) and was brought in in 1696 because of the melting of coinage of the realm. Silversmiths were forbidden from using Sterling Silver. The new Hallmarks included Britannia and a lion's head with neck. An increase in complaints by Silversmiths caused Sterling to be reinstated in 1720. The short period that the laws existed make Britannia Silver very desirable.

There is a slight dent on the base edge, but this does not detract from the beauty of this exceptional item that is in the whole in excellent condition.
