Product Description

A very attractive and unusual c1880 silver plated Spirit Kettle, with a modernistic shape.

The Kettle Jug is quite short and squat, yet retains an elegant design, no doubt inspired by the Christopher Dresser designs. The kettle sits inside a four legged frame, with stylised paw feet, that also holds the spirit burner. On the underside of the kettle are the marks H&H and bird symbol of Hukin and Heath, of Birmingham. Condition is very good, without any lifting of the silver plate, but with a small bruise on the edge of the base.

The firm was established in Birmingham in 1855 by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath. The firm's association with Christopher Dresser began in 1877; the first registered design dates from 1878, and others were entered up to 1881. Dresser's designs were launched at the opening of the firm's showrooms in Charterhouse Street in August 1879. In 1904 the business changed name to Hukin & Heath Ltd.
