Product Description

A rare and fine selection of c1900 Cigarette Cards that were produced by the Venezuelan Tobacco company Flor de la Habana (Flower of Havana) in Caraibo.

There are 54 in total, from what was probably a set of 60, although they are not numbered. The company was set up by Herman del Gallego, in 1889, changing from producing envelopes and stationery to producing cigarettes. Their brands Flor de la Habana and Grand Cruz, soon developed a reputation for their quality. Venezuela’s main export in the 18th and part of the 19th centuries was tobacco, until it was overtaken cocoa. The company was bought, in 1900, by Federico E. Schemel, who owned several cigarette factories and a matches’ factory.

The cigarette cards were most likely produced then. The show colour tinted photographic print pictures of famous actresses and performers of the 1880 – 1890s. Condition is mint. Testament to their rareness, is the fact that apart from 3 or 4 cards in the New York Public Library, and very occasionally 1 or 2 turning up at auction, they are unheard of.

Cigarette cards were originally issued by tobacco manufacturers, to stiffen the cigarette packaging and advertise cigarette brands. They began appearing in 1875, depicting actresses, baseball players, Indian chiefs, and boxers, issued by the U.S. company Allen and Ginter tobacco. Other tobacco companies soon followed suit. They first emerged in the U.S., then the UK, and then, eventually, in many other countries.

Size per card: 42 x 61 mm
