1966 Game Set of 40 Batman Cards Issued by Macleans Toothpaste

Product Description

A rare complete mint to near mint set of 40 Batman Cards that were issued by Macleans Toothpaste in the UK in 1966.

These medium size cards were produced of thin stock and were not very durable. Add to that the fact that they were designed to be played as a card game and few remain in good condition. Furthermore, the fact that they came with toothpaste, made it harder to obtain than bubblegum cards.

The set is divided into 7 themes, each of 5 cards, representing a Batman villain. They are: Joker, Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Mr Freeze, False Face and Mad Hatter. Each card from one of the themes is numbered 1 to 5 and has a coloured image, card title and a story vignette. There are also 4 cards with WHAM POW BANG, which represent a joker card in the game. Finally, there is an instruction card, detailing the rules of the game. This one appears to be the rarest as it was often discarded.

On the reverse of each card is the Batman Logo and FREE FROM MACLEANS TOOTH PASTE, in white on very dark blue. At the bottom is printed NATIONAL PERIODICAL PUBLICATIONS, INC., 1966.

It appears an identical set was also produced in Australia, in 1966, by Nabisco for issue with their breakfast cereals. The backs of the cards were different with Nabisco instead of Macleans.

An opportunity to obtain one whole set of the rarest of the Batman cards.
