Product Description

A unique and very desirable original ‘This Is Your Life’ Red Book that was presented to one of the very great legendary stars of Hollywood, none other than Mickey Rooney.

The book was presented to him on the 11th of October 1988, when he starred in the British version of the US hit show. The large book is bound in its characteristic red leather, with gold block lettering. The inside cover is printed with ‘This book is presented to MICKEY ROONEY as a memento of his appearance as guest of honour on This Is Your Life – 11th October 1988 – Thames Television, London’. It is also written in pen ‘Mickey – a great show. Best wishes from us all’ and signed by Michael Aspel, the presenter.

The rest of the book are large photographs of the guests that attended the television show and contributed to his biography. The guests include Ann Miller, Benny Hill, Maureen O’Sullivan, Ann Rutherford, Babs Watson, Jimmy Cook, Bob Hope, Stewart Grainger, Anthony Quinn, Jackie Cooper, Vic Damone, George Peppard, Eddie Bracken and Donald O’Connor.

This Is Your Life was a British biographical television documentary, based on the 1952 American show of the same title. It was hosted by Eamonn Andrews from 1955 until 1964, and then from 1969 until his death in 1987, aged 64. Michael Aspel then took up the role of host until the show ended in 2003. It returned in 2007 as a one-off special presented by Trevor McDonald, which to date was its most recent airing. In the show the host surprises a special guest, before taking them through their life with the assistance of the 'big red book'. Both celebrities and non-celebrities have been 'victims' of the show. The show was originally broadcast live, and over its run it has alternated between being broadcast on the BBC and on ITV. The surprise element was a very important part of the show; if the guest heard about the project beforehand, it would be immediately abandoned.

Mickey Rooney (born Joseph Yule Jr.; 1920 – 2014) was an American actor, vaudevillian, comedian, producer and radio personality. In a career spanning nine decades and continuing until shortly before his death, he appeared in more than 300 films and was one of the last surviving stars of the silent film era.

At the height of a career that was marked by precipitous declines and raging comebacks, Rooney performed the role of Andy Hardy in a series of 15 films in the 1930s and 1940s that epitomized American family values. A versatile performer, he became a celebrated character actor later in his career. Laurence Olivier once said he considered Rooney "the best there has ever been. Clarence Brown, who directed him in two of his earliest dramatic roles, National Velvet and The Human Comedy, said he was "the closest thing to a genius I ever worked with."

Condition is very good, with just some light bruising to the bottom edge of the book. A chance to own a substantial piece of television and Hollywood cinema history.
