c1920 Dutch Ship’s Compass & Copper Binnacle

£680.00

A very unusual c1920 Dutch (Netherlands) large Ship’s Compass and Copper Binnacle.
The 23 cm (9 inches) compass is made of brass and copper with a liquid spirit damped circular card that appears to be made of a cellulose type plastic and is marked in degrees and quadrants, but with the cardinal points in Dutch. That is East is O and South is Z. Unusually there are no maker’s marks anywhere on the compass, just the number 64312. The compass fits on 2 gimbals within the copper binnacle. The cowl has the viewing window horizontally on the top. To one side of it is the electric light housing. The binnacle would have been bolted to the central column in the wheelhouse.
Size: 50 x 36 x 29 cm (19 3/8 x 14 1/8 x 11 3/8 inches)
