A scarce c1860 Official Great Wax Seal of the Realm for Queen Victoria that would have been attached to important documents of State and comes with its original metal storage case.
The seal consists of a large cylindrical light brown wax seal with mouldings front and back and 8 pieces of string coming out of the top edge. These have been cut short but would have been attached to the pertinent parchment document. On the obverse we see a young recently crowned Queen Victoria sitting on the throne with the allegorical figures of Justice and Religion seated on either side and the Royal Arms and crown below. The edge is made up of a wreath of oakleaves. On the reverse is the figure of the queen on horseback surrounded by the inscription: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIARUM REGINA FIDEI DEFENSOR (Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of Britains, Defender of the Faith). The seal comes with its storage case made of tinned steel and painted black on the outside. The inner tin has a cut-out edge for the strings to exit when the case is closed.
Condition is very good apart for a couple of chips to the obverse and one chip to the reverse.
