Product Description

Artist: Unknown, after Adam Buck (1759-1833)
Title: Brother and Sister
Medium: Watercolour on Paper
Date: c1810

This charming Georgian watercolour relates to Adam Buck’s famous painting entitled ‘Brother and Sister.’

The painting proved popular during Buck’s lifetime and was reproduced by the printmaker Rudolph Ackermann in 1809. The Georgian revival of the twentieth century saw the same image reproduced in 1913.

The painting dates from early 19th century and possibly gives an insight into the original colours used in Ackermann’s print. Though the artist is unknown, the style of the painting strongly suggests a provincial or juvenile painter. Generally the children of well-off families were taught to draw and paint, explaining the many competent but unknown drawings and paintings from this period.

The condition of the painting is good, having been backed with card and wrapped in cellophane. There is minor wear to the edges of the sky.
