c1805 Miniature Framed Signed Portrait Painting of Mme Recamier

A beautiful early 19th Century miniature portrait painting of Madame Recamier (1777 - 1849), based on the original by François Pascal Simon, Baron Gerard.

It shows the head and upper torso of Jeanne Françoise Julie Recamier, better known as Juliette. She was a French society leader whose salon was frequented by leading literary and political figures. These included Chateaubriand, the Duke of Montmorency, Lucien Bonaparte, Prince Augustus of Prussia and Jean Jacques Ampere.

The painting is very finely detailed and is signed Berger. It is mounted and glazed in a very attractive fire gilded brass frame with burgundy velvet. The frame has a folding rest for display on a table and a ring for wall mounting. Given the beauty of Mme Recamier, the portrait was probably commissioned by one of her many admirers.
